[Also in Division C3] A hair-treating composition comprises an aminoplast precondensate, which may be etherified by a C 1-4 alkanol and an alkali metal sulphite, bisulphite, or metabisulphite. It may also contain a surface active agent and/or other polymers conventionally used in hair treatment. Preferably the aminoplast amounts to 1-10 wt% of the composition, and the sulphite salt to 1/40 to 1/5 of the weight of aminoplast. Many suitable methylol 'amine' precondensates are listed. The composition may be prepared from 2 separately packaged components, the one containing solid precondensate, the other a solution of the sulphite salt, or the one containing both precondensate and sulphite in solid form, the other water. An acid catalyst may be present in the composition, or in either component of the two-part-pack, or may be applied to the hair after the composition. In the Examples a mixture of precondensate and sodium or potassium sulphite or metabisulphite powders is added to a solution of acid or surfactant. The precondensates used are dimethylol succinamide, monomethylolurea plus monomethylolthiourea, monomethyloldicyandiamide, dimethoxymethylurea, partly methylated monomethyloldicyandiamide (these two with a vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer) and a mixture of monomethylolurea and monomethylol ethyl carbamate. The solutions contain sulphuric, lactic or acetic acid or phosphoric acid plus stearyl-(OC 3 H 6 ) 5 -O-CH 2 -CH CH 3 ) 2 or trimethylcetylammonium bromide alone or with ethanol and a perfume. The compositions are applied to hair, followed by an acid catalyst solution where necessary, and the hair is dried.
