1,236,111. Heat treating materials in rotary drums; drying free-flowing material and slurry. N. M. BOGUSLAVSKY. 11 Aug., 1969, No. 40019/69. Headings F4B, F4G and F4U. Apparatus for drying, destructive distillation or roasting of pasty materials comprises a rotary drum 1 with rotary charging and discharging devices 7 and 27, a material recirculating tube 12 with helical fins 16, an internal distributing device 17 in the form of scoops 18 on the drum periphery having discharge shoots 19 feeding either the recirculating tube 12 or a discharge tube 20 with helical fins 24 feeding a receiving chamber 25, and a rotary mixer 8. Pasty material or slurry is fed by device 7 into the fixed charging chamber 6 where it is mixed by bladed shafts in mixer 8 with dried material leaving recirculating tube 12. Conventional spring-loaded seals 5 and 26 are formed between drum 1 and chamber 6 and between discharge tube 20 and receiving chamber 25. The drum is heated by banks of tubes 29 supplied from a header 32 with steam, hot water or a heated organic fluid. It may also be heated externally by disposing the length between the bearing rings 2 in a combustion chamber.
