Abstract
1,236,066. Oleophilic graphite. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 9 Oct., 1969 [22 Oct., 1968], No. 49988/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] An oleophilic graphite, that is a graphite obtained by grinding under the surface of an organic liquid until the graphite has a surface area of at least 20 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm., has adsorbed on to its surface a substantially straight chain polymer that is a polymer having a major proportion of its backbone composed of carbon atoms the carbon atoms in the backbone being unsubstituted or substituted by one methyl substituent. Preferably no substituent groups are present. Preferred polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, or a copolymer thereof and the graphite contains less than 5% by weight of the polymer. The polymer may have a molecular weight of at least 10,000. The modified graphite may be prepared by grinding natural or synthetic graphite below the surface of an organic liquid, as indicated above and before, during or after the grinding adding a straight chain polymer to the liquid. This liquid may have a viscosity below 600 centistokes at 100‹ F. (38‹ C.), distil below 500‹ C. and have a surface tension below 72 dynes/cm. at 25‹ C. It is preferably a hydrocarbon having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The amount of graphite in the grinding medium is preferably less than 50% by weight and the grinding is performed in the substantial absence of air. The grinding may be carried out in a vibratory ball mill. A lubricating oil, preferably less than 20% by weight of the graphite, may be added to the grinding liquid. The oleophilic graphite, together with the lubricating oil if added may be separated from the grinding liquid. The oleophilic graphite so produced may be added to mineral or synthetic lubricating oils to give lubricating compositions
