Abstract

1,235,494. Sterilization. A.P.V. CO. Ltd. 27 June, 1969 [2 July, 1968], No. 31462/68. Heading A2D. Slurries such as soups, meat stews, beans in sauce and pie-fillings are sterilized by subjecting the bulk of the liquid phase to a continuous sterilization treatment, and sterilizing the solid phase with a small portion of the liquid phase by injecting steam to raise the temperature to a sterilization value, passing the heated material in rod or piston flow through a tube for the required holding time before uniting the phases. A visco elastic material such as a polysaccharide or a polyethylene oxide, may be added to the liquid phase accompanying the solid phase to assist in the formation of rod or piston flow.
