1,234,225. Application of hydrocarbon-potentiated herbicides. STANDARD OIL CO. 24 May, 1968 [7 June, 1967], No. 24887/68. Heading A5E. A method of cultivating a crop in which the soil is mechanically tilled, the crop is planted from seed and in which a herbicidal composition is applied to the tilled soil preemergent to the crop; or a method of cultivating a crop in increased yields, in soil containing unwanted vegetation, without substantial mechanical tilling of the soil and in which a herbicidal composition is applied post-emergent to the unwanted vegetation and pre-emergent to the crop; is characterized in that the herbicidal composition comprises a non-phytotoxic herbicide-potentiating hydrocarbon ingredient together with a herbicide is not more than 60% by weight of the minimum effective amount when used without the potentiating hydrocarbon, and is further characterized in that the hydrocarbon comprises at least one compound selected from various specified paraffins, cycloparaffins, condensed ring compounds and aromatics, e.g. as present in decanted oil extract, catalytic light gas oil and hydrocracked recycle oil. The herbicidal composition also may contain water and an emulsifying agent. Typical herbicides are atrazine, 2, 4-D, dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, picloram, amitrole and substituted ureas. The methods of the invention minimize contamination of the soil with residual herbicide.
