Abstract

1,233,853. Connections for printed circuit cards. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE BULL-GENERAL ELECTRIC. 24 Sept., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 47089/69. Heading H2E. Printed circuit cards CA1, CA2 are supported on a printed circuit panel 11 providing connections between them, the panel supporting connectors A, B, C, between pairs of which the cards are inserted. Electrical connections between the cards and the panel are provided by rows of contact blades 40, 41, whose lower ends are soldered to the panel 11, and whose upper ends have cross-members (44, Fig. 2) held in a slot in the connector body. Portion of each contact blade is thrust against a contact surface on a card by means of a push member 23 provided with two bosses 24, 25, the push members being urged outwardly by flexible blades 30, 31 which are formed in one piece with metal strip 29 supported by the connector. Strips 28 may be provided to position the push members during assembly. By varying the spacing X between adjacent connectors, cards of various widths may be accommodated, the contact blades on either side of a card may be staggered, as shown in Fig. 2, but the connectors may be fixed on the panel such that other arrangements are obtained. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4), the contact springs are supported by the connector at the base adjacent the panel 11, so that the flexible blades are inverted compared with Fig. 1. The contact blades are formed by gluing or depositing conductive metal strips (76, Fig. 4) on to the face of a thin insulating support sheet (77) which is fitted around the body of each connector, and held in position by plate (78) and pin (79), which are fitted to the top of the connector. The shortness of the electrical path between the cards and the panel minimizes impedance matching problems, and in a modification of the alternative embodiment of Fig. 4, the insulating support sheet has an earthed conductive layer (92, Fig. 7) on its inner surface, so that by selection of dielectric constant and thickness of the support sheet, and the dimensions of the contact blades, the characteristic impedance of the contact blades may be matched to that of the panel and the cards.
