Abstract

1,233,593. Radio navigation. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 23 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 24690/68. Heading H4D. In a sector radio beacon a first aerial radiates on frequency F, a second aerial radiates on frequency F +f (or F-f) and is spaced from the first aerial by a distance d determined by the wavelength # corresponding to F and the desired sector width, and a third aerial radiates on frequency F + nf (or F-nf) where n is an integer greater than unity, and the spacing between first and third aerials is nd. The aerials may be collinear or, to reduce backward radiation, the first aerial is offset forward of the line joining the other two by #/4. In an embodiment d = 5#/#, f= 15 Hz. and nf= 135 Hz., for use with a TACAN receiver. The first aerial is modulated with transponder reply pulses or random pulses as in TACAN. A further aerial, on the other side of the first aerial relative to the second aerial, may be added and radiates on F - 15 Hz. if the second aerial radiates on F+15 Hz., or vice-versa. Reference pulse trains are radiated by the first aerial. The beacon may be utilized for aircraft approach.
