Abstract

1,233,005. Evaporator systems; desalination of sea water. J. A. C. KENTFIELD. 13 June, 1968 [14 June, 1967], No. 27357/67. Heading BIB. [Also in Division Fl] Fresh water is produced from sea (or other saline) water by distillation in a plant comprising a multi-stage flash evaporator 24 and a vapour-compression evaporator 37, separate streams of sea water being supplied to the two evaporators through intakes 26 and 30, respectively. The compressor 21 of evaporator 37 is operated by steam turbine 20, the turbine exhaust steam being supplied through duct 23 to the heater of evaporator 24. Desalinated water is withdrawn from evaporator 24 through outlet 28, and from evaporator 37 through coil 35 which passes through a heater 34 for the feedwater being supplied to evaporator 37. Alternatively, this feedwater may be heated by the concentrated brine discharged from evaporator 37 through outlet 52. The steam produced in evaporator 37 is preferably dried, before it is drawn into compressor 21, by passing it through heatexchanger 53 wherein it is heated by compressed steam flowing through by-pass duct 54. The steam condensate formed in the heater of evaporator 24 is pumped to the boiler which supplies steam to turbine 20. The boiler may be heated by hot gases from a nuclear reactor. In a modified plant (Fig. 4, not shown), the boiler is dispensed with; for the steam effluent from the compressor of the vapour-compression evaporator is passed through a heater and then used to drive the turbine. The steam discharged from the turbine is passed through a de-superheater and is then divided into two streams, one of which is passed to the heating pipes of the vapour-compression evaporator while the other stream is passed to the heater of the flash evaporator. The condensate from the heater of the flash evaporator is pumped to the de-superheater. If auxiliary power is required for driving the various pumps, electricity can be generated by coupling the generator to the shaft of the compressorturbine assembly. It is stated that the vapourcompression evaporator may be replaced by a freezing process still and that the multi-stage flash evaporator may be replaced by a multistage submerged tube evaporator.
