Abstract

1,232,993. Colour television display apparatus. E.M.I. Ltd. 28 June, 1968 [29 July, 1967], No. 34977/67. Heading H4F. Display apparatus for colour television comprises a high definition display means 4 for establishing the brightness aspects of a display, and three lower definition display means 1, 2, 3 for establishing the colour aspects of the display, wherein the control on the lower definition display tends to affect the brightness of the display in a predetermined manner and the high definition display is controlled in such a way as to substantially neutralize this tendency. The three low definition displays 1, 2, 3 are eidophors scanned so as to produce displays representing the red, green and blue components of the scene, these being brought together by mirrors and passed through a fourth eidophor 4 controlled by the luminance signal, the resultant light beam forming the final colour picture display on a screen 5. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown), four eidophors having sources of red, green, blue and white light respectively are each scanned and the four displays are brought together by a mirror system, the red, green and blue eidophors being controlled by colour component signals to form a low definition picture and the white eidophor being controlled by the luminance signal from which the brightness component already supplied by the other tubes has been removed. It is arranged that the A.C. control signal of the fourth eidophor contains no negative excursions.
