A wear bushing 10 has an external shoulder 52 for engagement with a seat 50 in a universal joint 12 at the lower end of a riser 46 extending from a surface vessel to an assembly of blowout preventers (not shown). The bushing has an internal shoulder 20 by which it is supported at the lower end of a drill pipe 56 on a drill collar 18 or bit 16 for running into position and retrieval. Where the internal diameter of the bushing is greater than that of the bit or collar an independent running-in string may be used.
