A turf cutting machine comprises a wheeled chassis having at least one pair of rotary cutters and a horizontal blade for separating a strip of turf and means for adjusting the depth of both the rotary cutters and the blade. The rotary cutters 16 are mounted on the chassis and the rear castor wheels 21 are mounted by a linkage mechanism comprising links 24 pivoted to the chassis about an axis 26 at their forward ends, and links 27 which are pivoted at one end to links 24 and at the other end to links 28 which are fixed on a shaft 29 rotatably mounted on the chassis. The rear wheels 21 pivot about tubular members 18 which are attached by brackets 17 to the links 24. An arm 33 lockable by the engagement of a pin in one of the holes 31 is fixed to the shaft 29 such that rotation of the arm 33 raises or lowers the rear wheels. The output shaft from an engine 46 drives a pulley 49 via a belt drive 47 having a tensioner 50 pivotable by means of a lever control 51 on the handle 45 of the machine which thereby acts as a clutch mechanism. The rotary cutters are driven by a chain connected to the shaft of pulley 49 and a further chain drive from the axle 15 of the rotary cutters drives the front wheels 13 such that the peripheral speed of these wheels is less than that of the cutters 16. Rotatably attached to the rear of the machine by members 61 and 62 is a transversely extending blade 69 biased into a cutting position by spring 71 such that the strip of turf is cut into discrete lengths. The machine may be driven from the P.T.O. of a tractor and the cutting of the strip of turf into lengths may alternatively be effected by a reciprocable cutter.
