Abstract

1,231,826. Hydrocarbon conversion catalyst. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 19 July, 1968 [31 July, 1967], No. 34615/68. Heading B1E. A hydrocarbon conversion catalyst comprises a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite and a clay, the clay dispersed into a highly subdivided state prior to its incorporation into the composition, the degree of subdivision being such as to cause about 40 to 95% of the clay particles to have a particle size less than 0.3 microns. A siliceous gel or cogel may also be present in the zeolite matrix and suitable cogels include silica -Al 2 O 3 , -MgO, -ZrO 2 , -ThO 2 , -BeO, -TiO 2 and ternary combinations of these. The zeolite may be natural or synthetic and cations may be from Groups IB to VIII and the rare earths, with Na, NH 4 +, Ba, Ca, Mg, Mn, Sr, Zn, Zr and various rare earths being specified. Suitable clays are from the groups halloysite, illite, kaolinite, montmorillonite and polygorskite and a multitude from these groups are specified. Various metals may be deposited on or in the zeolite matrix including Pt, Pd, Ni, N, Co and Mo. Dispersion of the clay is accomplished by the addition of inorganic salts such as alkali metal phosphates, carbonates and silicates. Various methods are detailed both for the preparation of the zeolite-clay (-silica gel or cogel) matrix and the zeolite itself.
