Abstract
1,231,581. Turbines and wind motors. G.B. BATHURST. April 26, 1968 [Jan.26, 1967], No.3954/67. Heading F1T. A rotor operated by fluid flowing therepast comprises a shaft 2 carrying at least two rigid spars 7 each supporting a blade 1 towards the leading edge of the latter, the blade being of flexible material. When there is no flow therepast each blade 1 is flat or of aerofoil section and may have substantially zero angle of pitch relative to the plane of rotation of the rotor. As the flow increases each blade 1 flexes such that the pitch angle increases and an increasing concavity 3 is formed on the downstream surface 4 of the blade. Vortices 5 formed within the concavity 3 generate suction forces which attract the adjacent flow 6 tending to promote more nearly laminar flow and increasing efficiency. When used in a windmill the power output of such a rotor varies substantially directly with the windspeed. The rotor may be used in a vertical windmill, Figs.4, 5 (not shown) and also described in Specification 1, 231, 582. It can also be used to derive power from tidal or wave motions in water.
