Abstract

1,231,569. Laminated films with additives. HERCULES Inc. 25 Sept., 1969 [8 Oct., 1968], No. 47260/69. Heading B5B. Thermoplastic synthetic resin films containing additives, normally solid but volatile at extrusion temperature, are made by coextruding into contact with each other in the melt a core layer containing substantially all of said additive and a surface layer on each surface of said core layer containing substantially none of said additive. The laminated film may be extruded in flat or tubular form and may be subsequently stretched to orient at least one of its layers. The core layer and surface layers (which latter may comprise 20 to 80% of the total thickness of the film) may be of the same material. The core layer may contain from 0À05 to 0À3% by weight (of that layer) of the additive, which may be an antistatic agent. The core layer is preferably polypropylene and the surface layers preferably an olefin polymer or copolymer having a lower melting point than polypropylene. The laminate is preferably ¢ to 20 mils thick. Suitable materials for the film layers are the polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. Suitable additives are antistatics and slip agents (e.g. glycerol tristearate, erucamide, stearamide, oleamide and polyethylene glycol monostearate); antacids (e.g. calcium stearate); plasticizers (e.g. castor oil, dioctyl adipate and mineral oil); and stabilizers (e.g. dilauryl thiodipropionate, dibutyl-p-cresol and other phenolic antioxidants).
