Abstract

1,231,506. Solubilized alginate. WALLACE, CAMERON & CO. Ltd. 11 Sept., 1969 [13 Nov., 1968], No. 53725/68. Heading C3U. A solubilized calcium-containing alginic material is produced by a method comprising acidifying calcium alginate with a calculated quantity of acid sufficient to remove a desired amount of calcium, and reacting the acidified calcium alginate with a base, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, whereby the calcium removed by the acidification is replaced by a solubilizing cation. The calcium alginate may be bleached prior to acidification, e.g. with sodium hypochlorite, and is suitably in the form of a gauze. Excess base may be removed from the solubilized alginate using a weak acid.
