Abstract

[Also in Division C3] The content of suspended matter in an aqueous medium is reduced by addition of flocculating agent which is a synthetic organic latex formed by free radical induced polymerization of an unsubstituted or halo-, alkoxycarbonyl-, hydroxy-, carbamoyl-, alkanoyloxy-, cyano or aryl substituted C 2-30 olefin or diene, or a mixture thereof, in the presence of water and a cationic or anionic organic emulsifying agent to give a substantially water-insoluble polymer or copolymer. Aqueous media containing watersoluble phosphate ions are treated with a cationic latex optionally with the addition of alum. Aqueous media containing raw and treated sewage are treated with cationic and anionic latices respectively and an aqueous medium containing raw sewage is treated with an anionic latex and a cationic latex sequentially.
