Abstract

1,230,967. Labelling device. SOC. FRANCAISE D'ETIQUETAGE VIREY & GARNIER. 25 Feb., 1970 [19 Nov., 1969], No. 8961/70. Heading B8F. A device for transferring labels from a magazine past a gumming station to a bottle &c. comprises a transfer cylinder comprising a number of angularly adjacent segments 10 having a length corresponding to the label length disposed along generatrices of the cylinder surface, the segments being rotatable together and each fitted with a groove 11 registering the end 12 of a feeler 13 urged against the segment 10 by a spring (not shown), so that, when no label is present on the segment, a blade 20, actuated by the plunger 19 of an electro-mechanical device 14-18 controlled by the action of the feeler pressing against the segment, urges a roller 22 fitted to a rod 23, carried by the transfer cylinder, upwards towards a recess 24 of the segment, so that the roller 22 slidably engages a cam member 26 thereby forcing the segment 10 to recede towards the axis of rotation of the transfer cylinder and away from the gumming device. When a label is carried by the segment, the end 12 of the feeler is forced away from the segment and the device 14-18 allows the blade 20 to remain in its lowest position so that the roller 22 clears the cam 26 and gum is applied to the label. In an embodiment of a labelling machine, each segment is supported on a horizontal arm (40), Fig. 2 (not shown), extending laterally within the transfer cylinder and has its inner end mounted on a pivot pin (41), each arm being operatively connected to a roller (22) via a curved crank pin (42); the angular shift of the roller in relation to the pivot pin is calculated to ensure that the backward movement of the segment is parallel to the enveloping surface of the transfer cylinder. Labels are fed from packs (32) by reciprocating rollers (33) to the transfer cylinder. A belt (34) is constantly coated with adhesive; the belt applies the adhesive to the backs of the labels on the transfer cylinder, picks them up, and carries them to the turret (38) of the labelling machine.
