[Also in Division C5] Amine alkylsulphonates of the general formula in which R is a C 6-18 n-alkyl radical or a chlorinated C 6-18 n-alkyl radical; R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, or 2 or 3 radicals represented by R<SP>1</SP>, together with the N atom, form a heterocyclic ring, m and n are integers of 1 to 3, (m+n) is 4, and p is a value from 1 to 2, are prepared by reacting an alkali metal paraffin sulphonate which is largely free from paraffin and colourless of the general formula in which M is an alkali metal, at a temperature of 0-100‹ C. in the presence of a C 1-4 alcohol, optionally mixed with water, with substantially equivalent amounts of sulphates of organic amines of the general formula H m-1 N(R<SP>1</SP>) n or substantially equivalent amounts of sulphuric acid and of said amines, the alkali metal sulphate formed is separated and the amine alkyl sulphonate is isolated from the filtrate in pure form or in a concentrated solution by distilling off the solvent. The reaction is preferably conducted at 20-45‹ C. using 1-8 parts by weight of alcohol based on the weight of alkali metal paraffin sulphonate. In the examples, the triethanolamine, morpholine, tris - isopropanolamine, oleylamine, p-toluidine, 3-methoxypropylamine-1, cyclohexylamine and pyridine salts of C 13-18 paraffin monosulphonate are prepared.
