Abstract

1,230,737. Removal of slag from furnaces. INVA A.B. 12 March, 1970 [12 March, 1969], No. 12051/70. Heading F4B. Apparatus for removing slag from an arc furnace comprises a suction pipe 6 sloping upwardly from its mouth 5 and discharging via an extension 11 into a tiltable container 12 acting as a gas seal, said extension 11 being connected at 8 to a vacuum source. A propeller 7 on each side of pipe 6 moves slag and metal towards the mouth 5 which has a pair of collecting baffles (9, Fig. 2) disposed to form a V in front of the mouth. The pipe 6, made of refractory material, graphite or steel, encased in a steel pipe 16 and protected from the furnace heat by insulation 17, is detachably carried with the propellers 7 by a fork lift truck. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4), the suction pipe slopes upwardly throughout to a hood over a ladle carried by a fork lift truck, the hood being connected to a vacuum source. Towards the end of the process, the vacuum is lessened, so that any metal picked up drops back down pipe 6 without entering container 12 or the ladle.
