In cultivating micro-organisms, oxygen is fed into the culture medium under super-atmospheric pressure e.g. 1 atm. gauge pressure, and the culture medium is continuously stirred, preferably with an intensity characterized by a Reynolds number of not less than 1 x 10<SP>5</SP>. Employing two consecutively connected fermenters, the unused oxygen in the first fermenter is removed from culture fluid and passed to the second fermenter, along with the carbon dioxide formed in the cultivation, to saturate the culture fluid flowing continuously from the first fermenter. Unused oxygen from the second fermenter is freed of carbon dioxide and returned to the first fermenter. The culture medium may be treated with ozone at a rate of 5 to 10 mg. per litre during or prior to the cultivation. An example is directed to the cultivation of a Candida yeast on C 10 -C 24 n-paraffins or glucose.
