Abstract

1,230,178. Food package. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 16 May, 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 23433/68. Heading B8C. In a package including a container and a food product, such as luncheon meat, cheese, frankfurters and chili, the container comprises a base 18, Fig. 2, of plastics foam and a self-supporting cover 42 hermetically sealed to the base and preformed to the shape of the enclosed product, to obtain overall contact between the product and cover, the base being self-supporting in that it is not deformed by its own weight. The base 18 may comprise a laminate of a film or films of plastics, 22, e.g. " Saran " (Registered Trade Mark) or polyvinylchloride and a plastics foam ply 24, e.g. of expanded polystyrene or polyethylene, having a peripheral groove 28 and a circular fold 40. The cover 42 is preferably transparent and of polyvinylchloride but may be of a layer or multilayer of other plastics, e.g. Saran or a Sarancoated polystyrene. A peripheral lip 48 of the cover is located in the groove 28 of the base and sealed either with a soft tack adhesive such as a copolymer of 50% styrene and 50% butadiene or a heat sensitive adhesive, or by heat alone, for example when the film 22 comprises a biaxially-orientated film, which becomes randomly-orientated in the region of the seal on application of heat, thus forming a weakened tear line. Figs. 4 and 5 show alternative configurations of the cover and base peripheries. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the cover is secured to the base along one side by staples and scored to provide a hinge, the opposite side being provided with thumb-sized cut-outs (98), and a hole (96) for suspending the container.
