Abstract

1,229,816. Multiple doctor coating apparatus. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. 17 July, 1968 [21 July, 1967], No. 34037/68. Heading D1L. A multiple doctor apparatus, for applying in a single step a plurality of coatings to the surface of a continuously travelling web, comprises a plurality of chambers 3-6 each connected to a coating composition supply means and to a discharge slot 7-10 for directly applying the coating compositions successively to the travelling web 1, each discharge slot having an opening 11-14 facing the web and extending over the whole width of the web, a plurality of doctor blades 15-18 which define the slots 7-10 and meter the coating compositions, each doctor blade having an accurate smoothing surface, the length of the said surface of the blade 18 which meters the coating composition for the outermost layer being, in the direction of travel of the web, from 5mm to 20mm and 5 times greater than the length of any of the smoothing surfaces of the other blades, and a back plate 19 which, together with the blade 15 defines the discharge slot for the composition for the innermost layer. The length of the blades 15-17 is preferably 0.5mm to 2mm although blade 15 may be less than 0.5mm. The apparatus is particularly useful for forming the emulsion coatings on colour films. An equation is given whereby the clearance required between doctor blades and web for given layer and total layer thickness for compositions of specified viscosity may be calculated.
