In an apparatus for manufacturing a composite mouthpiece rod, plugs or components of more than one type and/or length are fed to a depositing arrangement having n channel bearing circumferential zones equal in number to the number of types and/or lengths, a particular type &c. passing into a particular channel from which they are subsequently deposited into line with one another but spaced apart from one another by an amount equal to at least (n - 1) L where L is the length of one plug or component. In one embodiment, of which Fig. 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, three types of plugs 11, 12, 13 are fed in streams into three channels formed in circumferential zones 4, 5, 6 of a rotary member 1 to which they are held by suction applied through apertures 10. The plugs 11, 12, 13 are then transferred to a further rotary member 2 which deposits them to form a single line on an air pervious band 3, the falling of the plugs 11, 12 being controlled by the successive application of suction to, and cutting off of suction from, from top to bottom, of lines of flutes 14. In another embodiment, for feeding only two streams of plugs, the fall control feature is omitted. The apparatus may replace the disc-pusher plug-feeding mechanism of the filter-making machine of Specification 971,491.
