Abstract

1,228,922. Chlorinating polyethlene. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 28 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 41126/68. Heading C3P. Polyethylene is chlorinated by the action of chlorine in the absence of solvents or suspension agents by treating a finely particled low pressure polyethylene having a molecular weight within the range from 300,000 to 3,000,000 with a mixture of chlorine and oxygen. Preferably the chlorine and oxygen are in a volume ratio of 1: 1 to 1: 5. The polyethylene may have an average particle diameter of from 400 to 5000 microns and a specific surface area of 20 to 1000 cm.<SP>2</SP>/g. In the example a low pressure polyethylene which has been prepared in the absence of solvents using a catalyst containing chromium (VI) oxide is treated with a mixture of chlorine and air.
