Apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of liquids similar to that described in Specification 1,011,863 includes a reed switch 71 actuated by a magnet 77 attached to a detent 72 and connected in series with a digital counter (73) (Fig. 6, not shown) so as to record the number of measures of liquid dispensed. The apparatus comprises a manually operable valve 12 for controlling the supply of liquid to and from a metering unit 14 such as that disclosed in Specification 1,011,862. The detent 72 is adapted to engage slots 58, 60 in flange 54 of a movable member 28. In operation with the valve in the position shown, pressurized liquid is fed via conduit 70, chamber 30, port 66, passage 86 and ports 90, 26 to act against one side of a flexible diaphragm in the metering unit, the liquid on the other side of the diaphragm being forced through an outlet 80 via ports 24, 88, passages 84, 62, and 82. During dispensing, the valve member 28 cannot be moved since the liquid flow in the conduit 70 maintains the detent in the slot 58. In an alternative form of apparatus similar to that described in Specification 1,187,026 a metering unit 110 including spherical chambers 112, 114 is controlled by valve means 138, 140 remotely controlled by a valve 154, a detent means including a detent device 162 associated with a valve 164, and a detent device 166 interposed between push button 156 and valve 154. One of the detent devices is as shown in Fig. 8 and the other excludes the reed switch 71. In operation upon depressing the button 156 compressed air is fed via pipes 158, 160 to move valve 164 to a position in which air can flow via pipe 146, the valve 140, and pipe 148 to actuate the valve 138 so that air acting on one side of a diaphragm in the chamber 114 is exhausted thereby allowing liquid to flow into the unit on the other side of the diaphragm via pipe 126 and one-way valve 129. When the push button is released, air flows via pipes 158, 142, valve 138 and pipe 134 into chamber 112 so as to dispense a measured quantity of liquid as the other chamber is filling simultaneously the position of the valve 140 is, via a pipe 135 changed over in readiness for the apparatus to operate in the reverse manner. The counter actuating reed switch may not be associated with one of the detent devices, instead a capsule comprising a tubular body containing a member of bobbin shape may be disposed anywhere in the liquid circuit with the member including a magnet for actuating an adjacent reed switch when liquid is flowing in the circuit.
