An electric shaver 10 comprises a cutter head assembly 30 mounted in a casing 12 and driven by an electric motor 52 controlled by a switch 78, a housing 24 slidable over the casing and having a hinged closure 34, 36 adapted in one position of the housing to totally enclose the cutter assembly, the movement of the housing being adapted to actuate the switch to an " off " position when the cutter is enclosed and an " on " position when the cutter is in an exposed operative position. The inner face of one end wall of the housing is formed with a slot in which the lever 80 of the switch slides the ends 94, 92 of slot actuating the lever. The upper end of the housing is provided with pivoted covers 34, 36 held closed, as shown in Fig. 7, by means of springs 86, 88. Upon downward movement of the housing, the flaps are opened (Fig. 8) and the end 94 abuts the lever 80 so that the cutter assembly is actuated. Further, downward movement of the housing causes abutments 122, 122a, Fig. 4, at the ends of slots 119, 119a formed in the housing, to engage with projections 112, 112a on pivoted cover-plates 106, so as to cause the latter to open (Fig. 6) and permit hairs to be cleaned out of the open ends of the cutters; the cover-plates are maintained open by springs 118, 118a. In order to vary the closeness of the shave, a spacer bar 70 is provided between the pair of cutters 62, 64 and may be raised or lowered according to the cut required. The bar is mounted on a member 125 provided with projections (134, 136, Fig. 14) which formed cam surfaces (142, 144), the latter surfaces being acted upon by tapered surfaces (146, 148) formed on a slidable plate (76). The plate is movable by means of a lever (160, Fig. 13) actuated via a pushbutton 22. The motor may be energized by means of chargeable batteries 50 or mains A.C. or D.C. current.
