Abstract

1,227,549. Electro-photographic apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. Sept. 20, 1968 [Sept. 22, 1967], No.44818/68. Heading G2H. A development brush 47 has pile-like fibres 51 and is loaded with charged toner particles by rotation in mesh with the brush a hollow, apertured donor member 52 containing toner particles 56. The brush may be of natural fur, e. g. rabbit fur, or cloth such as velvet. The donor member has an inside layer 53 made of a rigid material such as brass, and an outer layer 54 made of any suitable material, e.g. silk, which occupies a position in the tribo-electric series different from that occupied by the toner particles. Mixing vanes 55 provided in the donor member serve to keep the donor particles in a loose consistency and are covered in a material such that the particles are charged by rubbing. The brush fibres penetrate the apertures of the donor member, and in addition to brushing the photo-sensitive drum surface with donor particles a cloud is also produced to assist in developing solid areas. A granular carrier such as glass or steel beads forms a developer mixture with the toner particles and assists in obtaining a uniform charge.
