Abstract
1,226,931. Graphite bodies. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 7 Jan., 1969, No, 868/69. Heading C1A. Graphite bodies are prepared by compressing vermicular (expanded) graphite to form said graphite into a thin foil having a density of from 0.3 g./c.c. to 1.8 g./c.c. cutting this foil into narrow strands, intertwining these strands in a random fashion to form a random mass, and compressing such mass under a pressure of at least 30 p.s.i. (2À1 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>) to form the desired body. The length to width ratio of the graphite strands is at least 8: 1 preferably 14: 1 to 200: 1, the density of the individual strands being from 0.5 to 1.6 g./c.c. The pressure applied to the random mass is preferably 500 p.s.i. to 50,000 p.s.i. (35 to 3500 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>). The pressure applied may be uniaxial or isostatic. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,049,588.
