[Also in Division C3] A process for carrying out an exothermic reaction between a gas and a solid reactive therewith in a fluidised bed comprises passing the gaseous reactant optionally in admixture with an inert gas through the solid in the form of a loose pulverulent reaction material at a rate which is not sufficient for fluidisation, and fluidising the solid reactant by intermittently blowing an inert gas into it. The process may be applied to the chlorination, sulphochlorination, nitration or oxidation of polyolefines or P.V.C. using nitrogen, carbon dioxide or anhydrous hydrogen chloride as the inert gas. The chlorination may be effected in the presence of catalysts, U.V. light or radioactive radiation.
