Abstract

1,226,156. Hydrophobic cathodes in silver-zinc and similar cells. LEESONA CORP. 20 March, 1968, No. 13391/68. Heading H1B. A rechargeable electrochemical cell comprises a porous zinc anode and a metal-containing cathode having incorporated therein 1-10% of the total cathode weight of polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluoroethylene, polyvinylfluoride, polyvinylidenefluoride or polytrifluorochloroethylene or a copolymer of the monomers thereof, and an alkaline electrolyte. The Figure shows a cell having a zinc anode 1 of 55% porosity, a silver cathode 2 of 30% porosity and containing particles of PTFE, and a fibrous cellulose membrane 3 saturated with 28% aqueous KOH. After use the cell may be recharged by initially using a low current, e.g. 1-12 mA/cm.<SP>2</SP> for 3-15 mins., then the normal current, e.g. 15-50 mA/cm.<SP>2</SP> The above structure and charging procedure reduces dendrite formation at or near the cathode. The cathode might also be of, e.g., Ni or Mn.
