Seams.-Relates to ornamental seams for sewed articles in which the ornamentation is produced by an edge portion of material indented at intervals-to produce a scalloped effect as described in Specification 25547/05. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a folded strip 7 has its free edges interposed between the folded edges 3, 5 of a main body fabric 2 and facing strip 4. A line of stitches 10 secures the fabric 2, strip 4, and strip 7 together and certain of the stitches, preferably regularly recurrent stitches, pass around the exposed edge of the strip 7 and confine it as shown at 11. A second line of stitches 12 parallel to the line 10 secures the facing strip to the fabric. In another form, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, an ornamental tuck is produced by folding the main fabric 1 so as to produce upper and lower superposed layers 2', 4<1>. A line of stitches 10' secures the two layers together and certain of the stitches pass round and draw in the edge 7<1> of the fold as shown at 11'. A second parallel line of stitches 12<1> serves to secure the two layers of material and strengthen the seam. Sewing-machines; braids, ribbons, and the like, attaching; folding-devices.-A machine for mechanically producing the effect shown in the Figures comprises two needles 13 and loopers 14, guides 16, 19 for the facing strip and edging strip, a fold guide for the edge of the body fabric, grippers 21, and an edge indenter 22 with a needle slot 23. The work is fed by ordinary means which is suspended at regular intervals when the grippers are forced downwardly to grip the work, and the member 22 is advanced to deflect the edging between the grippers.
