1,225,630. Electromagnetic clutches. AUTRONIC DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968 [25 Aug., 1967], No. 39213/67. Headings F2C and F2L. An electromagnetic clutch comprises axially aligned input and output armatures 2, 3 carried in steel bushes 4, 5 surrounded by a brass former 6, the clutch being operated by a stationary coil 12. The inner ends of the bushes 4, 5 are spaced apart to form an air gap 14 ensuring that the energizing flux is concentrated around the armature peripheries in the region of their radial friction surfaces 15, 16. The inner surfaces of bushes 4, 5 are provided with bearing layers of porous copper filled with a mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene and lead. The adjacent ends of the armatures are bored for the reception of ceramic permanent magnets 24, 25, the poles of which are so arranged that the armatures are mutually repelled when coil 12 is not energized. A fixed ceramic annular brake magnet 26 is provided at one end of the clutch, the other end being closed by a thrust washer 28 having a bearing layer similar to that of the bushes 4, 5.
