Abstract

1,224,547. Control systems for incandescent lamp arrays. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 6 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 26939/68. Heading H2H. An arrangement for controlling the brightness of individual lamps 12-22 in a group of incandescent lamps comprises connecting each lamp across a respective crosspoint of a coordinate array of wires, each pair of wires providing a crosspoint which is connected to an alternating current source 6 through a respective pair of switches such as 24, 28; 26, 28 &c.,- each switch being shunted by a rectifier, e.g. 34 or 38; all the rectifiers being poled so that the current flows through each lamp whose associated switches are open during the same half of each cycle of the A.C. source thus dimming the lamps. With all the switches open and the supply 6 connected all the lamps 12-22 are supplied by way of the rectifiers 34-42 whereby the lamps are energized such that each is approximately at half brilliance. Full brilliancy of any lamp is effected by closure of the respective switches e.g. full brilliancy of lamp 12 is obtained by closing switches 24 and 28. The switches can be of any suitable type such as mechanical contactors or thyristors. In a second embodiment two assemblies as shown in Fig. 3 are connected to the A.C. source 6 in parallel, the rectifiers in one assembly being oppositely poled to those in the other assembly. Thus the lamps in each assembly are energized in alternate half-cycles of the supply.
