Abstract

1,224,363. Moulding chair frames. R. I. KLIENE. 29 Oct., 1969 [31 July, 1968], No. 36637/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A4] A seat frame for subsequent upholstering comprises a rotationally cast hollow polyethylene shell, e.g. of 1/16-inch wall thickness, the back portion 14 whereof is relatively flexible and the seat portion 15 whereof is rendered relatively stiff by an injected filling of rigid polyurethane foam, e.g., of density 1À5 to 2À5 lbs. per cubic ft. The rotational casting is effected from polyethylene powder in an aluminium mould heated, e.g. to 500‹ F., by hot air or a molten nitrate/nitrite salt bath, and then cooled by a water shower. After inserting wooden battens 12, for subsequent fixing of legs 13, across the seat portion 15 through holes in the sides thereof, foamable polyurethane is injected from a gun 27 into the seat portion 15 in rapid succession through a number of holes 19 spaced around a central seat recess and, after clamping the seat portion between a supporting jig 17, the foam expands and sets to limits 30, leaving unfilled and relatively flexible the chair back portion 14, and a seat portion 32 defining the base of a seat recess 25. In the Fig. 10 embodiment, the chair includes armrests 35 which are separately moulded therefrom and which locate to the frame, at matching hemispherical surfaces provided at the bottom corners 36 and at stepped portions 39 and 40 of the frame.
