Abstract

1,224,104. Coating cores by extrusion. N. L. SOLOMON. 18 June, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 30858/69. Heading B5A. A core 10 is coated by passage through a crosshead extrusion die having a fluted mandrel 48 which provides passageways 49, see also Fig. 3 (not reproduced), extending between a region adjacent extension 40 of a breaker plate 38 and die plate 50. Material from screw 32 passes through the breaker plate 38 into cavity 41 and from thence is diverted by sloping face 45 of a plug 42 through passageways 49; some material flows rearwardly along bore 47 of mandrel 48 as at 52, the amount being dependent on the extrusion pressure and speed of travel of core 10. Such material back - flow aids centring of the core. Passageways 49 may be formed by ribs on the mandrel (as shown) or by ribs on conical surface 53. Screw 32 may be replaced by a piston. Heaters 34 are provided. Core 10 is preheated at (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), and the coated core is cooled in a bath (20) and passed to a take-up spool (26) via a capstan (22) and associated air-blower (24). As described the core is of rectangular cross-section and coating materials mentioned are nylon, polybutyrate, polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyl resins, cellulose and its derivatives, protein substances and polymeric petroleum derivatives.
