Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and G6]. An installation comprising a rotary elasticfluid or hydraulic machine such as a blower, fan, compressor, pump or turbine removably mounted in a housing and communicating with an enclosed fluid-containing space, has means for isolating the space from the ambient when the machine is withdrawn from the housing for sevice or repair. As shown in Fig. 1, an electric motor driven blower unit 15, 16 is removably mounted via radial lugs 35, 36 in a housing formed within a steel-lined penetration 11 in a concrete pressure vessel 10 of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, to recirculate the gases exhausted from a boiler 14. The blower unit includes rotatable guide vanes 22 adjustable by a removable actuator 26 via a shaft 25, coupling 54, 55, Fig.3, and gear-box 23. The blower unit can be withdrawn downwardly from the housing after the unit has been rotated to bring the lugs 35 between the lugs 36. However, before the blower unit can be withdrawn, the space within the pressure vessel is isolated by lowering a valve unit 40, comprising a sleeve 41 and a ring 43 slidably mounted on axial rods 42, into a position in which the ring 43 is sandwiched between the bottom surface of sleeve 41 and an upwardly-facing surface 70 of the housing, Fig. 2 (not shown). The valve unit 40 is prepared for lowering, after removal of the actuator 26, by lifting the shaft 25 to disengage the coupling 54, 55, engage a coupling 57, 58 and, via a rotatable frusto-conical sleeve 59, disengage locking tabs 52 on resilient locking fingers 51 from grooves 53 in a threaded shaft 46 screwed into the sleeve 41 and rotatably supported at its upper end by bearing means 61, 62. Thereafter, the shaft 25 is rotated in the appropriate direction to cause the shaft 48 to screw through the sleeve and thereby lower the valve unit 40.
