Abstract

1,223,962. Preparing chlortetracycline bisulphate. DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP. 26 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 10388/69. Heading C2A. Crystalline chlortetracycline bisulphate is prepared by slurrying chlortetracycline in tetrahydrofuran, adding sulphuric acid to the slurry to form a solution of the bisulphate, clarifying the solution, and crystallizing and recovering the required product. The sulphuric acid may be added as a mixture with further tetrahydrofuran. Crystallization may be initiated by seeding with crystals of chlortetracycline bisulphate or by addition of a non- solvent, e.g. C 1 to C 4 alkanols. The starting tetracycline is suitably prepared by treating the hydrochloride salt with alkali or nitrogenous base. A further yield of the bisulphate is obtained from the mother-liquor after crystallization by precipitation with a non- solvent.
