Abstract

1,223,358. Cutting apparatus. JAMES CHRISTIE & SONS Ltd. 26 Nov., 1969 [27 Nov., 1968], No. 56167/68. Heading B4B. A hand-type guillotine comprising a guard including side sheets 15, 16 secured at their ends to brackets 8, 11, a U-shaped member 23 pivotally mounted at one of its ends, on the bracket 8 and connected at its other end, to the sheets 15, 16 by a pin-and-slot device 20, 21, at least the side sheet 16 being formed of a transparent material. In the construction shown, two additional pairs of side-plates 19, 22 are connected between the U-shaped member 23 via pin-and-slot devices 20, 21, the pins being a loose fit in the slots so that upon lowering the knife 1 the guard members collapse with it. All the side-plates and U-shaped member 23 may be formed from transparent material and a stay may be provided for maintaining the guard in a raised position. A paper clamp (26, Fig. 2) formed from a spring steel strip and a scale (25) are provided. A padlock may be passed through holes 29 in the bracket 11 in order to lock the knife and guard assembly in the lowest position.
