Abstract

1,223,343. Graft copolymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 7 May, 1968, No. 21496/68. Addition to 1,101,983. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division B2] A graft copolymer comprises (a) a backbone component, insoluble in an organic liquid, which is a copolymer of at least one mono-olefinically unsaturated monomer and from 0À5 to 20% by weight of a monomer which provides grafting sites by abstraction of hydrogen or opening of a double bond and (b) a graft component, soluble in the same organic liquid as in (a), which is a polymer or copolymer of mono-olefinically unsaturated monomers. Suitable backbone polymers (a) are copolymers of 0À5 to 20% of allyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, isopropyl styrene or aminoethyl vinyl ether with an acrylic acid, amide, nitrile or ester, maleic anhydride, fumaric acid and esters thereof, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl ethers, vinyl toluene, vinyl esters, vinyl halides, vinylidene halides, 3 - (beta - methacryloxyethyl)- 2,2 - spirocyclohexyloxazolidine or glycidyl methacrylate. Specified graft monomers (b) are 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl, lauryl and stearyl methacrylates and vinyl esters. The graft copolymers are used as stabilizers in the production of dispersions of film-forming polymers, e.g. of acrylic and methacrylic amides, esters and nitriles, maleic anhydride, maleic and fumaric esters, styrene, methyl styrenes, vinyl acetate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl ethers and vinyl and vinylidene halides, provided that when the film forming polymer comprises an ester of a vinyl carboxylic acid the backbone comprises no such ester and vice versa; backbone component (a) being compatible with the film-forming polymer and soluble in or swollen by the monomer(s) from which the polymer is prepared. The dispersions produced are mixed with pigments, coalescing agents and plasticizers, e.g. glycol ethers and ether esters, and butyl benzyl phthalate and di(methyl cyclohexyl)phthalate.
