Abstract

1,222,544. Producing woven elastic fabric. C. H. TURCKSIN. 8 May, 1968 [23 Nov., 1967], No 21714/68. Headings D1K and DIP. An elastic woven fabric which is both longitudinally and laterally stretchable is produced by weaving a fabric from an elastic warp, and weft threads which become crimped when they absorb moisture, impregnating the fabric with a partly cured latex during which impregnation the weft threads absorb moisture from the latex and become crimped, and fully vulcanising the impregnated fabric at a maximum temperature of 70-75‹C. The warp threads may comprise cores of vulcanised rubber filaments having an external covering of helically wound textile filaments and the weft threads may consist of cellulose fibres which prior to impregnation of the fabric with latex are in an unwashed and unimpregnated state. The fabric may be impregnated by conveying it through a bath of partly cured latex, the liquid being forced into the weave by rollers and any surplus latex being squeezed off. During impregnation and vulcanisation the fabric may shrink in width by an amount of 5-15% due to the cellulose fibres assuming a crimp when they absorb moisture from the latex both. Fabrics 40 and 100cm wide may be produced.
