Abstract
1,222,453. Dimethyl sulphoxide. GLANZSTOFF A.G. 17 June, 1969 [28 June, 1968], No. 30523/69. Heading C2C. Pure dimethyl sulphoxide is obtained from mixtures containing acids, bases and/or salts by treatment with an ion exchanger followed by fractionation, e.g. by distillation. Anion or cation exchangers may be used according to the nature of the impurities, and one may follow the other or both may be present in a mixed bed. Batch and continuous operation is described. The crude starting material may be obtained by oxidation of dimethyl sulphide, e.g. with HNO 3 , Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 , H 2 O 2 or electrolytically. In a preferred embodiment the mixture is treated with an ion exchanger in a first step, the ion exchanger is washed with water in a second step and the washings are added to the treated sulphoxide and the combined liquid fractionated.
