Abstract

Apparatus for carbonating water, Fig. 1, selectively to two degrees of carbonation comprises at least one container as at 24 immersed in a water tank 30 in which the level is maintained by a float switch (not depicted). When the container 24 is vented to atmosphere through solenoid valve 66 and line 68 as shown, water enters it through check valve 34 (see also Fig. 3). If valve 66 be changed over to connect carbon dioxide line 52 to diffuser 74, the water in the container is carbonated and discharged by the gas pressure to the bottom of turbulator 26 and thence to a dispensing line 90 having a capillary flow portion 45 to reduce agitation. If desired further carbon dioxide may be supplied to the bottom of turbulator 26 by actuation of valve 60 and at a rate controlled by needle valve 59, to provide an increased degree of carbonation. As shown there may be two containers 22, 24 each of which can refill while the other is discharging, by alternate actuation of the valves 66, 67. Check valves 40, Fig. 3 (see also Fig. 6, not shown) prevent passage of carbonated water between containers 22, 24. The gas diffuser 74, Fig. 3, comprises a spring-loaded check valve 76, and a ring of vertical restricted passages 86 in a sleeve 80, 80a (see also Fig. 5, not shown) through which the gas is discharged. The turbulator 26, Fig. 4 (see also Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) comprises a tube 39 having therein a plurality of cylindrical elements 42 each having one closed end 48 with perforations 40. An electro-mechanical control circuit, Fig. 12 (not shown) operates the valves 60, 66, 67 and also valves (not described) for delivering plain water or a selected beverage syrup to the receiving cup.
