Abstract

1,222,243. Plasma generators. KEARNSTRIBUNE CORP., J. E. HOGLE, and G. H. HOGLE. 22 Feb., 1968 [5 July, 1967; 12 Jan., 1968], No. 8613/68. Heading H5H. A self-initiating plasma generator 10 utilizes a radio frequency induction coil 30 directly electrically connected at 84 to a conductive hollow electrode tube 82 through which gas is passed, the tube being capacitatively coupled to earth potential, and the gas being excited to ionized plasma as it issues from the tube 82, initiation of a plasma discharge 108 occurring spontaneously. The generator shield or casing 12 is of aluminium and is at earth potential due to a resilient wipe 66 connected to a metal sleeve 58 connected in turn via a coaxial cable earth lead 52 to a radio frequency generator. Shield 12 acts as one condenser plate and tube 82 as the other condenser plate of the capacitative coupling. Lead 54 from the R.F. generator is connected to a metal sleeve 72 and via a short lead 74, with suitable impedance matching, to an intermediate turn 70 of coil 30, which is arranged on an insulating gas inlet tube 32. Metal sleeve 58 is connected via a short lead 64 to earthed end 56 of coil 30. Coolant flows through the plasma generator 10 via inlet and outlet sleeves 72 and 58, impinging from tube 102 on the boron nitride tip 90 of generator 10, which tip is replaceable, and has a restricted orifice 92. Casing 12 is filled with air, liquid coolant or ceramic material, Fig. 4 (not shown). Radio-frequency coil 30, electrode tube 82 and the metal shield or casing 12 form a tank circuit with a high inductance to capacitance ratio giving a minimum reactance value of about 1000 ohms at a chosen plasma operating frequency. Thegenerator 10 operates on monatomic or diatomic gases, or combinations thereof. The discharge may be coupled to conductive or non- conductive substances, including air. The generator has application to mineral separation and recovery, high temperature chemistry, high speed cutting, and cauterizing or cutting lining tissue.
