Abstract

1,221,977. Klystrons. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 May, 1968 [18 May, 1967], No. 23121/68. Heading HID. A multi-cavity klystron having at least two electrostatic beam-focusing systems includes also a magnetic beam-focusing system which is operative over that region which includes the drift tube preceding the last cavity and extends therefrom to the collector electrode. In the four-cavity klystron shown, an electrostatic focusing arrangement 27, held at cathode potential, is mounted in each of the drift tubes 5, 17 and 18, and either an electromagnet or permanent magnet focusing arrangement 22, 23 extends over drift tubes 19 and 20 and gaps 15 and 16, both the inner flanges 11 and 12, and the outer circumferential walls 24, of the final two cavities being of soft iron to concentrate the field. Preferably, also, the entrance to the collector 25 is surrounded by a soft iron annulus 26.
