Width of a workpiece 2, such as a wire, fibre, liquid stream, or slit, is determined by irradiating the workpiece by radiation from a laser 1 and locating a detector, such as 5, intermediate the maxima or minima of a lateral diffraction fringe so that movement of the fringe, due to variation in width of the workpiece, results in a change in the detector output. In order to compensate for variations in laser output or displacement of the wire, a number of detectors, 4 to 7, may be positioned to detect movements of more than one fringe so that workpiece width changes are detected by detecting differences between detector outputs. The radiation detector may include an optical device to relay the optical signal to a measuring device.
