Abstract

1,220,268. Steam traps. S. MIYAWAKI. 30 Aug., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 41422/68. Heading F4U. In a floating disc-type steam trap, steam and condensate from inlet 2 pass through filter 4 and then through a jacket 16 surrounding the main part 11 of the replaceable trap unit, before passing into the latter. The reversible disc 8 of the unit is equipped on its opposite faces with one or more different sized bleeder grooves S 1 , S 2 . Alternatively, tapering holes through the disc, or holes or grooves in the valve seat r 2 may be provided to bleed steam from pressure chamber 21 to the outlet 3. The lower end of chamber 21 communicates with an annular condensate reservoir 22, at least equal in volume to chamber 21, arranged to be heated from jacket 16, and in which removable ring fillers 24 may be placed to adjust the effective reservoir volume. In operation, with disc 8 closed against valve seats r 1 , r 2 , steam bled from chamber 21 through grooves S 2 to outlet 3, is replaced by re-evaporation of condensate from reservoir 22 by heat absorbed from jacket 16, so that opening of disc 8, and discharge from inlet 2 to outlet 3 through the steam trap, is delayed until all of the condensate in reservoir 22 has been re-evaporated and bled away, or, due to cooling of the condensate in jacket 16, no more condensate can be re-evaporated from reservoir 22. A desired operating frequency of the trap may thus be attained. On opening of disc 8 and discharge through the trap, the reservoir 22 refills with condensate, ready for the operating cycle to be repeated after completion of condensate discharge and consequent reclosure of disc 8. The fluid flow path through jacket 16 is defined by flow guide cylinder 12 and holes 13. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the filter may comprise a perforated disc mounted across the top of the flow guide cylinder, the assembly being held in place by a spring mounted between the disc and the outer cover which defines the jacket. The cap 10 and valve seat member 9 may both be made of stainless steel, or the former may be of a copper alloy having a stainless steel inner cap mounted in its inside top surface (Fig. 6a, not shown) to prevent wear due to the action of the floating disc.
