Steering linkage for a motor vehicle includes hydraulically-damped lost-motion connecting means which permits variation in the length of the linkage to allow the steerable wheels to adopt the most suitable relative alignment as the vehicle turns. The lost-motion connecting means comprises a piston-rod 16a carrying a piston 16 slidable in a cylinder 18 retained in a body 10 by a sleeve 17. An oil reservoir 19 surrounding the cylinder 18 communicates through ports 26 with a space 25 around the piston. A shuttle valve 3 fits in a bore in the piston with sufficient clearance to permit a limited oil flow between chambers 2, 9 at opposite ends of the piston, and is arranged to put the unpressurized chamber 2 or 9, according to the direction of the prevailing load on the linkage, into communication with the space 25 through an axial passageway 7 or 11, ports 6 or 6a, one of grooves 15, and ports 4, or 5, thereby to allow a flow of oil to compensate for the unequal areas of the chambers 2, 9. The steering linkage may comprise two tie-rods linked by a relay rod.
