Abstract

1,219,701. Pulping waste paper. RIVERSIDE PAPER CORP. 10 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 18340/69. Heading D2W. Natural and synthetic resins and plastics are removed from waste coated or impregnated papers by extracting the paper with a solvent in an extraction zone, forming a miscella of solvent and dissolved plastics, maintaining the extraction zone at a temperature below the softening point of the plastics, at a pressure sufficient to retain the solvent in the liquid phase, separating the paper stock from the miscella; recovering the solvent by distillation wherein, prior to the precipitation of plastics solids, an amount of a hydrocarbon sufficient to form a flowable residue is added, the hydrocarbon being miscible with the solvent, non- volatile at the temperature of distillation and forms a stable suspension with the precipitated solids. The term "plastics" is used to include resins. The hydrocarbon may be a petroleum hydrocarbon. The solvent may be tetrachloroethane, trichloroethylene, ethylene dichloride, pentachloroethylene, perchloroethane, toluene, xylene or decalin. The process may be performed continuously or in batches, when miscella from one batch may be used to contact more fresh batches. In a preferred arrangement, each batch is first contacted with solvent which has contacted two previous batches, then with solvent which has contacted one previous batch, and, finally, with fresh solvent.
