Abstract

1,219,267. Light modulators. MULLARD Ltd. 21 May, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 25853/67. Heading H4F. [Also in Division H1] A light modulation system comprises a Faraday effect element in the form of a single crystal of YIG in which at least some of the yttrium or iron is substituted by another element to improve the Figure or Merit (ratio of the Faraday rotation per cm. at saturation to the Saturation magnetization) as compared to YIG itself. For optimum operation the crystal should have a low saturation magnetization, a high specific Faraday rotation, and for broad band operation the effect should be linear over a high proportion of the band of transparency (e.g. between 1À2 and 4À5 microns). The crystal may comprise Y 3 Fe 5-x Ga x-y Al y O 12 wherein x lies between 0À9 and 1À5, preferably 1À2, and 0 # y# x. 0À005 to 0À02 atoms of silicon may also be substituted for some of the Ga and/or Al in the above formula. Indium (In) or Scandium (Sc) may be substituted for some of the iron in YIG at x values from 0À6 to 0À8 for broad-band operation. Europium (Eu) or terbium (Tb) may be substituted for all of the yttrium in YIG. With all the yttrium replaced by Tb or Eu, and also some of the iron replaced by gallium and/or aluminium, good materials as regards both Figure or Merit and shorter wavelength transparency are obtained. In particular, Eu 3 Fe 5 _ X Ga x O 12 where x lies between 0À2 and 0.8, or Tb 3 Fe 5-x Ga x O 12 , where x lies between 0À05 and 0À5, are good Faraday rotators (Aluminium may be interchanged in part or in full for the Gallium). Specific crystals referred to are Y 3 Fe 3 . 85 Ga 1 . 15 O 12 (disc-shaped crystal), and Y 8 Sc 0 . 7 Fe 4 . 3 0 12 .
