Abstract

[Also in Division G1] An apparatus for measuring and cutting strand material, such as rope or cord, into uniform lengths comprises a frame carrying reels 7, 9 for supporting a supply of the material, a feed wheel device 18, 29 for feeding the cord through a cutting zone 37 under the control of timer T, switch means for stopping the feed device after a predetermined time and for then actuating a rotary cutting knife 42 to sever the cord and means for automatically restarting the feed device following actuation of the knife. The feed device includes a grooved wheel 18 driven by an electric motor (15, Fig. 3) and co-operating with an idler roller 29 mounted on a spring-loaded arm 27; the roller 29 may be lifted out of engagement with the cord by means of handle 32. The knife 42 is mounted on the shaft 41 of an electric motor 40 which is mounted on a pivoted support member 39, Fig. 2, and actuated by a solenoid 47. In operation, the timer T is set to a time corresponding to the required length of cord and a button S pressed thereby starting the feed motor so that the cord is fed from a reel 8 or 9 through guide tubes 23, 34. After the elapse of the selected time, the timer actuates a switch (S-3, Fig. 6) to stop the feed motor and also deÀenergize a solenoid 60 which, via pivoted lever 56, positively brakes the motor, the lever engaging one or other of projections 54 on the motor shaft. Movement of the lever 56 causes a switch 61 to be actuated to thereby prevent operation of the knife until after a short time, a further switch (S-5, Fig. 6) then being actuated by the timer so as to energize the solenoid 47 and cause the knife to sever the cord. The timer then resets itself automatically to its original position so that the apparatus will again operate as described above when the button S is pressed.
